The Dumb and The Lazy
I once picked up a woman at Abercrombie Street near Central Park.
It took me about 10 minutes to go around the block and find her - good thing I knew the shortcuts too otherwise it would have been even longer.
She took in a "No Stopping" zone expecting me to drive up to her and pick her up. I told her to come to me.
She wanted to go to the UTS Library - which involved driving up the traffic lights, turn right, turn left, go straight to the end of the road. 3 minutes top with traffic lights.
She could have walked. I looked it up on Google Maps: 800 metres. 10 minutes walking.
I picked up a guy near 6 Crown Street - close to the Domain car park in Woolloomooloo.
He was having a cigarette when I pulled up and threw half the cigarette away.
He wouldn't tell me where he was going at first, just told me to drive, left turn.
I asked again where he was going, he said Town Hall but he was going to direct me.
We got up to the up of St Mary's Road, he told me to turn right.
That's ok, we could go to Elizabeth Street, then go down Market Street.
He was telling me that he was going for a second interview at Sales Force etc...when I asked him if we should turn right (into Market Street).
"No, keep going straight." OK.
Then, he said "Turn right at the next set of lights." which would have been Park Street.
I noticed the "No Right Turn" right so I pointed out to him.
"OK then, just let me off here." which was just opposite Sheraton on the Park.
Immediately after he got out, he lit up another cigarette.
That whole distance, if he were to walk, would have been about 850 metres, taking 12 minutes.
Town Hall is another 450 metres, another 6 minute walk.
So the guy spent $8 to not go very far, had to walk the rest of the way anyway, and wasted a cigarette.
Or he could have spent $8 and arrived at Town Hall in comfort - if he had told me where he was going when he first got in the car.
