Restaurants I recommend

imdb

I love food. I love photography. I take photos of the food I eat at restaurants to practise as food photography is considered quite difficult.

The other reason I am writing this, in addition to sharing with others of the good (or bad) restaurants I’ve visited, is to remind me of what I had so that I can order (or NOT order) the food again next time.

I am not paid to write for the restaurants so I can only sample the dishes via multiple visits. The photos will therefore change over time as I take better pictures and try new dishes.

Hope you enjoy them.

A long time ago, in a suburb far, far away....

Well, actually, it's the suburb next to where I live, there was a fish and chips shop near the train station.

Every Friday and Saturday evening, this place would be so packed that the people had to stand outside the shop to wait for their food. Their food was superb! Literally the best fish and chips I've ever had. Freshly made food with fresh ingredients. Life couldn't be better.

One Friday night, I drove past this fish and chips place and there was no crowd. Uh-oh.

Another Friday night, I drove past again and there was still no crowd. Uh-oh. Uh-oh.

Sure enough, my worst fear was realised - change of owner.

This shop has since changed hands a few more times and no crowd has ever been seen outside the shop since.

I missed a good fish and chips shop.

Years later, I found one in Balmain but not long after, the owner sold it and we haven't been back since.

Along came Ocean Foods.

I've driven along Lyons Road and driven past this shop many times.

Every time I drove past, there's usually people inside buying food. If it was lunch or dinner time, there's a CROWD!

Finally, we went to give it a try - and we weren't disappointed!

This is family owned restaurant and has been around for over 30 years, won a couple of awards and most of all, uses Australian and New Zealand seafood!

We arrived around 8pm and could see many people walking out with big paper bags - the takeaways!

Parking took a little bit of time but at that time, we didn't have too much trouble.

We walked in and the place gives a very bright, clean feeling with smells that makes you hungry.

As you can see from the photo there's an extensive menu and an extensive selection of food.

We thought we'd give the old favourites a try:

Pacific Oysters Mornay and Kilpatrick:

Oysters Mornay and Kilpatrick

These Pacific oysters are big, juicy and delicious. Will be ordering more next time.

We were a bit conservative and ordered the coleslaw:

They have many other types of salad if you don't like coleslaw. We will also be trying their other salads next time.

There was a Fish Mornay on the menu so I ordered it:

The Fish Mornay is not bad but there's nothing to write home about. I prefer the Oysters Mornay. Big, nice and juicy....

Since we came for fish and chips, we had to order them.

The chips comes only in one size. It's more than enough for a family of four (by the time you eat the rest of the food)!

Soft on the inside, crisp on the outside. Added with chicken salt and they make a good meal on their own.

Finally, the Battered Fish and Calamari:

The calamari is firm but tender. You cut it with the a plastic fork and it effortlessly separates. You take a bite and it cuts off cleanly.

No pulling and getting the rubber band effect. No chewing for ages and not able to swallow.

The fish - big pieces, firm and best of all, not wet and soggy inside. Generous lemon wedges to squeeze over the fish.

We actually ordered some prawns too but I was too busy eating and forgot to take a photo!

Absolutely delicious!

As the Terminator says: "I'll be back!"

The boring stuff:

The shop is in Drummoyne, along Lyons Road, which is a major road, so you really can't get lost finding the place.

It's at the corner of Lyons Road and Gipps Street, which is a residential area. So if you are patient, you should find a parking spot fairly quickly.

There are places to sit to eat your food but don't bring a party of 20.

If you come during the day, you can even order take away and go to the nearby Taplin Park and enjoy the beautiful view of Five Dock Bay.

If you love fish and chips, you have to give this place a try.

If you find a better fish and chips shop some place else, please let me know.
